Best ELD for Owner-Operators

The FMCSA requires an electronic logging device for most interstate commercial motor vehicle operations — running without one, or with one that's malfunctioning, risks an out-of-service order and fines at the scale house. But almost every device below is FMCSA-registered, so "which one is compliant" isn't really the question. The real question is total cost of ownership: the monthly fee, the contract you're locked into, and whether the hardware is free or a real upfront cost. Compare on that, not the sales pitch.

Who's exempt from the ELD mandate?

The two big carve-outs: drivers operating under the short-haul exception (staying within a 150 air-mile radius of the home terminal and returning within 14 hours) and anyone driving a vehicle with an engine older than model year 2000. Both still have to keep paper logs or timecards — exempt from ELD doesn't mean exempt from Hours of Service.

What happens at a roadside inspection if I don't have a working ELD?

An inspector can place you out-of-service on the spot — you don't drive again until it's fixed — plus a citation that can carry real fines and hits your carrier's CSA score. A malfunctioning ELD you haven't documented and aren't actively fixing is treated the same as not having one at all.

Can I switch ELD providers in the middle of a contract?

Only if your contract lets you — this is exactly why the Contract column above matters as much as the monthly fee. Multi-year agreements common with fleet-focused providers often carry early-termination fees or require the hardware to be returned; month-to-month or no-contract devices let you switch the moment the value stops making sense.
